Learn more about well visits and why they help keep kids healthy and happy.
You just brought your baby home from the hospital, but now what? You can keep your bundle of joy healthy by scheduling your child’s first well visit with your Chesapeake pediatrician. Let's learn about well visits, and what makes them so important for your child’s health.
Q. What is a well visit?
A. A well-visit is an appointment that focuses on the child’s health and overall well-being. Since your child is constantly growing and changing, your Chesapeake pediatrician wants to ensure that everything is developing as it should and that your child is healthy. A physical examination is a major part of the well visit.
Q. Why should my child have a well visit?
A. Childhood is a time of fast and sudden growth and change. Therefore, it’s important to know that your child is hitting those appropriate developmental milestones and that they are healthy. Your Chesapeake pediatrician has the tools and expertise to pinpoint health problems as soon as possible when they can be treated more effectively.
Furthermore, a well visit can actually prevent health problems from arising. A pediatrician can discuss healthy lifestyle changes to prevent conditions like diabetes and childhood obesity.
Q. How often should my child come in to see their pediatrician?
A. When your little one is born, their first well visit should occur two to three days after bringing the baby home. After the first visit, we will recommend that your child return during their 1,2,4,6, and 9 months, as well as 1 year, 15 and 18 months, 2 and 2.5 years, and each year between 3 and 10 years old. Once your child turns 10 they should come in for well visits each year until they turn 21 years old.
Q. What will happen during my child’s well visit?
A. During your well visit, your Chesapeake pediatrician will perform a thorough physical examination to check that your child is growing and developing properly and that there are no issues preventing them from reaching milestones. We will also perform hearing and vision tests, and record your child’s vital statistics, including height and weight.
During this time, we will also sit down and discuss your child’s lifestyle, including eating habits, sleeping habits, home and school life, and diet. We want to make sure your child is getting the proper nutrition and sleep needed to protect against infection and to develop properly. This is also a time to ask any questions you might have about your child’s health. This visit is as much for the adults as it is for their little ones, and we are here to make things a little easier on everyone.
If it’s time to schedule your child’s upcoming well visit, or if you have any questions regarding well visits, then call your Chesapeake pediatrician. Let Pediatric Partners of Hampton Roads, servicing the Chesapeake, Norfolk, and Virginia Beach areas, keep your child healthy throughout the year.
